ULFA(I) module busted in Assam; 7 arrested
Assam, January 8: Seven persons have been arrested as Assam Police claims to have busted a module suspected to be of the banned ULFA(I), which was allegedly involved in recruitment and extortion. Police said the members of the module planned to send ten youth to join the ULFA(I) training camps in Myanmar around Bihu. Based on their interrogation, the police picked up one Khanindra Kalita from Sipajhar area of Darrang. “He was identified by the two boys,” the source said.Subsequently, based on Kalita’s interrogation, police apprehended Dharmendra Deka and Hiren from the same neighbourhood. As the network started unravelling, cops claim to have found out the alleged involvement of Dhrubo Baishya and Bolin Deka, both residents of Udalguri. They were also arrested. “They planned to send ten more youth to Myanmar to the ULFA(I) camps around Bihu. We have identified the ten boys. They are being counselled,” the Assam Police source said. Assam Police source said the sixth person in the network was one Prasenjit Saikia from Mangaldai, who is part of a pro-talk faction of the ULFA(I). “He was involved in extortion,” said the Assam Police source. A letter allegedly written by Nayan Medhi, a senior leader of ULFA(I) was recovered from him. The letter was sent via Whatsapp to a person in Pandu area of Guwahati who took a printout and delivered it to Saikia, police sources say. This person has also been arrested. The seven have been arrested under sections of the UA(P)A. They are presently in police custody.
