Huge protest in the city
Guwahati, January 23:
A massive protest was organised in Uzan Bazar area of Guwahati by leaders and members of Allz Assam Students Union (AASU). AASU’s Chief Adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, President Dipanka Nath and other senior leaders and members led the torch rally in Guwahati. Police tried to stop them from moving ahead. Another torch march was organised in Biswanath. Hundreds of AASU members and supporters took part in the march. Here too the police tried to stop the protesters from marching ahead. The protests are being staged ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visits to Assam on January 23-24. AASU had earlier announced that the apex students body would launch a state-wide protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that saw Assam burn in 2019. Today’s torch march is part of the three-day protests planned by AASU during PM and Home Minister’s visit to the state. All district units of AASU are holding a torch light rally. On January 23, AASU members would wear black badges ahead of PM Modi’s first visit to state this year. During the visit of the Union Home Minister on January 24, black flags would be hoisted and copies of CAA would be burnt.
