Diphu, February 5: One person died while as many as 227 people taken ill due to food poisoning after consuming lunch served in packets during a function held at Diphu Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here on Tuesday.

The incident has prompted Karbi Anglong deputy commissioner Ng. Chandra Dhwaj Singha to order a magisterial probe into the incident.

As many as 224 were admitted in the DMCH since Tuesday afternoon after having packaged lunch in the inauguration of 1st academic session of DMCH.

Of them, 119, including 61 children have been discharged from the hospital till filing this report.

The function was attended by chief minister Sarbananda Sanowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma along with other senior leaders and officials of the state government.

The packaged food was served to the attending people after the meeting.

A chaotic scene prevailed in DMCH as the patients started arriving hours after the meeting.

Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang visited DMCH on Wednesday morning to take the stock of the situation.

“Food samples have been collected and sent to the forensic laboratory for test. A probe will be ordered and the guilty will be punished according to the law,” Ronghang told reporters after visiting the hospital.

Meanwhile, executive member (EM) for health & family welfare, Khansing Rongpi said that the packaged lunches were brought from Rasa Restaurant at Sarabbhati in Guwahati by Brahmaputra Infrastructure Ltd, which was engaged in construction of the DMCH.

“The packaged lunches were brought from Guwahati. After having the food, 224 were taken ill. As per the doctors, 119 were released. Of them 61 were children.
