Guwahati, February 2 : The piggery sector of Assam has been facing an unprecedented crisis since the last one year starting with unusual deaths of pigs in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Biswanath and Kamrup districts in January 2020. This was followed by the COVID-19 lockdowns which brought many farmers to economic penury because they had to continue feeding the pigs even though there was no income due to the lockdown.
As such, the piggery sector in Assam has been reeling under extreme stress.
Commercial pig farmers who were coming to sustainability had to meet severe financial losses and thousands of families which depended on piggery as a livelihood are still facing econmoic losses.
The pork lovers across the city have seen rise in prices. Popular outlets across the city have all increased their menu prices.The supply lines are halted, the demand has shot up and the local variety is not enough to cater to it. As a result, the end price of the products such as raw pork meat, smoke pork has risen in the city.
